There are several versions and model numbers for the Bundeswehr. The Bund and Bundeswehr are interchangeable words meaning the same thing. The word refers to all aspects of the German Military, including the Army, Navy and AIr Force.
Pilots would wear these knives with reinforced sheaths in the cockpit. Some models had special cutting blades and safety harnesses. The special cutting hook design of the blade was used for cutting parachute lines. Pilots would also use the knife as a survival type knife. Ground crews, particularly the fire-fighting crews, would carry the knives to cut pilots out of their safety harnesses in emergency situations.
Being used by the military, Bund Knives were not sold to the public. They were purchased by the government and issued to pilots and crews. Being government property, very few of these knives are in private hands.
One of the models shown is the Model 16-379 Bundeswehr. It appears in the 1984 PUMA catalog as a item for sale. It is the only model that was sold to the public. It is a very rare knife as it was not sold to the public for very long.
